Dimmu Borgir

Pure musical genius doesn’t even
begin to describe it.

Do not research the band, do not see what they look like, do not read the lyrics, do not even read the names of the songs, do not predispose yourself in any way, just play Eonian (below) and focus on the music; you can do all the research you want later.

Dimmu Borgir are a Nordic Black Metal band with clear orchestral inclinations and a keen desire to explore their musical genius wherever it may lead. They are among my favorite Metal bands of all time. Their song-writing and playing are very precise, very tidy; everything just falls into place so naturally, it almost feels like deja-vu, when you first listen to their music.

Just as their music is precise and refined so too is their production: never too much of this, never too much of that; no one instrument dominates the mix. They emphasize what needs to be emphasized and subdue what needs to be subdued. Voices, guitars, keyboards, and drums all get their fair chance to shine when it’s appropriate.

And while a myriad transient elements keep their sound stage in flux, there is never any clutter; Nothing ever lingers for too long.

You might be thinking now that this is all just blah, blah, blah… but listen to the albums I suggest here, in this section, and then come back to read these same paragraphs again; you will see how everything I am saying is absolutely true.

From the elaborate, fable-like, dramatic classical music intros—master pieces on their own and worthy of the golden age of cinema—to the explosive barrage of double bass drums dotting their musical landscape, the music of Dimmu Borgir—as TikTokers and YouTubers might say—will live in your head rent-free.

Eonian

Show tunes, anyone?

I am likely to catch some flack for saying this, but here it goes…

Although you may not get the feel of it from just the first track alone, the rest of the playlist should persuade you: This entire album should be turned into a Broadway play.

Eonian is a masterpiece in every conceivable way and that is really all that needs to be said about it. But, of course, I cannot just leave it at that…

The musicality of this album will easily surpass anything you have ever come across with in your lifetime. Nothing you have ever heard before quite matches this experience. You really have to hear it to believe it.

“Why?…”, you ask, “…are you trying so hard to shove this album down our throats?” Because I do not want you to miss out. Go give it a listen, you will be glad you did.

Septicflesh

Septicflesh are now—I think—in a category that is all their own… I will write more about this in the Symphonic Metal section, but, in the mean time, here’s a link to the concert Septicflesh held in Mexico City alongside the Toluca Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir (100+ musicians seemlessly blending their music styles). You will enjoy the concert more if you are acquainted with the music first, but I leave that up to you.

The theme here is Metal that would be right at home in a Broadway theater. Given the fact that Septicflesh happens to be a Greek band, drama just comes with the territory, doesn’t it?… as in… Greek Tragedy?

Anyway, Septicflesh are one of my favorite bands and there is a whole lot I have to say about them, only I don’t know quite where or how to start. I became aware of their existence thanks to a friend of mine who wanted to trade a few of my R.E.M. CDs. He offered a very luxurious version of the album below (A Fallen Temple) and said: “You are going to like this one”. I trusted his judgement.

A Fallen Temple

Track list to be placed here sooner than later, in the mean time check out the following tracks, which should be turned into a musical (the entire album is great though):

4."Underworld - Act I"

9."Underworld - Act II"

12."Underworld - Act III"

13."Finale" (Instrumental)
